Epidemiology of pediatric uveitis and associated systemic diseases

Abstract Background The early detection of uveitis associated with systemic inflammatory disease in children is important for proper treatment and prognosis. However, the diagnosis may be delayed because difficulties childhood examinations minor symptoms. objective our study was to identify pattern investigate frequency clinical features rheumatic diseases pediatric patients uveitis. Methods This retrospective observational reviewed medical records (age ≤ 18 years) at a Korean tertiary hospital between January 2005 December 2018. Data collected included age onset uveitis, sex, anatomic location ocular inflammation, comorbid (including disease), complications, relevant laboratory data, treatment. Fisher’s exact test used compare categorical variables Mann–Whitney U continuous variables. A p -value < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results total 155 were this study. median 13.0 years (interquartile range, 9.5–16.0 years). male-to-female ratio 1.09. process unilateral 51.6% children. Anterior panuveitis, intermediate posterior represented 51.6, 26.5, 6.5, 1.9% cases, respectively. Idiopathic (65.2%) most frequent type Systemic associations responsible 28.4% among which juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) cause (14.8%). Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 antinuclear antibody (ANA) positive rates significantly higher JIA than those ( = 0.006 0.007, respectively).
